Here’s what I use to prevent and treat illness during cold and flu season.

Essential Oils

We diffuse Young Living’s Thieves blend in our home, often for preventative measures. If someone in the house is sick, I diffuse Young Living’s Thieves and Purification blends together in their room during bedtime/naptime. There are a plethora of other essential oils that can be used to treat other specific things, but for the sake of preventing and treating general illnesses, these are my go-to oils.

Elderberry Syrup

I like to make a batch of elderberry syrup to have on hand during cold and flu season. I give 1 tsp to each of my kids daily (only for ages 1 and up because of the honey in the syrup), and 1–2 tsp for myself daily (and my husband, if he remembers). Elderberry syrup boosts the immune system and is a powerful natural antiviral. ( I buy dried elderberries in bulk and prefer to make my own syrup at home. I get my elderberries at Bulk Herb Store online (, and I use this recipe: (

Juice Plus +

I really love Juice Plus+ as a supplement for my family throughout the whole year! In an ideal world, we would get all of the nutrients we need on a daily basis from food sources, but if your family is anything like mine, your diet can definitely be lacking, especially in the fruits and veggies department, and especially during the busy holiday / winter months. Juice Plus+ is basically just fruits and veggies in capsule or gummy form, and it helps bridge the gap between what we should be eating and what we actually eat.  *Full disclosure*– I am a rep for Juice Plus+! I love this product and the benefits I’ve seen in my family from it so much that I decided to become a rep. I take the Garden and Orchard blend capsules, and my children take the Garden and Orchard blend chewables every day all year round. (

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 is an excellent supplement for immune support. It’s another supplement my family takes daily all year round. Vitamin D also plays an important role in disease prevention. (  It is very difficult to obtain adequate Vitamin D levels through food sources and/or sun exposure so the majority of our population is lacking in this important vitamin, which is where supplementation comes into play. My favorite D3 supplement for its quality and cost-effectiveness is Carlson Labs, which can be found on Amazon. They also have an infant version:

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal Silver is a powerful, natural antiviral and antibacterial agent. I like to use this if we know we have been exposed to a sickness (I.e. your friend you just had a play date with yesterday calls to let you know her children have just come down with a stomach bug! Eeek!) If I know we have been exposed to an illness, I give myself, my husband, and each of my children a dose right away (taken as directed on the bottle for adults and children ages 4 and up. For infants I do ¼ tsp as a dose). Then I follow up with 1 dose per day for the next couple of days. I prefer the Sovereign Silver Brand, which can be found on Amazon and at most health food stores. (

Boiron Homeopathics

We use Boiron Oscillococcinum and Boiron Coldcalm in our home as needed, taken as directed, for ages 3 and up. We have seen great results from both! The Oscillococcinum is better for flu-like symptoms, and the Coldcalm is better for cold symptoms. These are definitely items I am thankful to have at my disposal and in my “natural medicine cabinet. Boiron products can be found at most Walgreens, CVS, Target, and some local grocery stores as well as many local health food stores. They can also be ordered on Amazon, or you can use the handy “Store Finder” function on Boiron’s website to see if a store near you has the products:

I have breastfed my little ones through quite a few cold and flu seasons. If you are able to breastfeed your babies, I highly recommend doing it.   It is a natural way to support and boost their immune systems, and this is just one of MANY benefits to both baby and you! (

I’d love to hear from you if there are any items you would add to this list or if you have had any great results with the items I listed here.

Here’s to a healthy season ahead for you and yours!
