Like all moms, I wear many hats. I’m a nurse, cook, therapist, and teacher. I homeschool my little boy and girl, but my teaching hat extends beyond my children through my essential oils classes, both locally and online. What does that mean? I teach people how to use essential oils as a safer, more effective, and cheaper alternative to drugs.
One of my family’s most powerful testimonies about essential oils remains the fact that we haven’t had a sick doctor visit since we started using them four years ago! Think about the time, hassle, and money saved. That doesn’t mean they never get a cold or a tummy bug, but it does mean that sickness is RARE, and if we do get anything, we have total confidence in these precious oils to give our bodies what they need to restore themselves to wellness, without the disruption and side effects of synthetic medications.
Recently, I’ve heard reports of people getting the flu in droves, which is my motivation for this blog post. In fact, my daughter had a minor anxiety fit at the thought of getting the flu. Finally, I just looked at her and said, “So what if we do get the flu? What do we have here to help us?” She smiled and said, “Oils!” Even my young daughter knows the power of essential oils.
Below, I share our tips for getting and staying well, but first, I want to stress the importance of researching the oils you are using. I know you want the best for your family, just like I do. We want to be sure the products we are using are safe and that they work! The two things to research before selecting your essential oils are: (1) sourcing and (2) testing.
With regard to sourcing—do the oils come from indigenous regions where those plants and trees grow naturally in the right climate and soil? Are they grown without harmful chemicals? Many in the essential oil industry cut corners or even try to “extend” pure oils by adding cheaper ingredients.
As for testing, ask the company (yes, contact the company directly) to find out how they test their oils. How many different types of testing do they do? Is it unbiased, third-party or in-house testing? Will they reveal their test results to ensure that what they say is in that bottle is actually in that bottle, be it peppermint, lavender, etc.? Most essential oil bottles that say “100% pure” are actually full of contaminants and fillers.
With this criteria in mind, my family and I (and hundreds of medical institutions around the country) only trust doTERRA oils because they do not compromise in the purity of their oils.
Now that we understand the importance of purity, let’s get down to business with some helpful tips. My very favorite immune-boosting, sickness-fighting blend is OnGuard. Tip #1 – The very first thing I ever did to protect my family is to create my Germ Away Spray. We use this spray on our hands after we’ve been around people. And we avoid hand sanitizers like the plague. Sanitizers laced with chemicals strip the natural protective layer off our skin leaving us MORE vulnerable to the next germy surface we touch.
Germ Away Spray:
In a 1 oz. or 2 oz. glass spray bottle,* add 5 drops each of OnGuard, Melaleuca (more commonly known as Tea Tree), Lemon, and 1 tsp. of fractionated coconut oil. Then fill to the top with non-chlorinated water.

Tip #2 – Diffuse, diffuse, diffuse. We regularly diffuse virus- and bacteria-killing oils, like OnGuard and/or Breathe, to kill airborne pathogens and support the immune system of everyone breathing in the room. Did you know that if you diffuse for just an hour, the oils stay suspended in the air for several hours afterward?
Tip #3 – Get rid of toxic chemicals in your cleaning products, soaps, etc. Those toxins negatively affect the immune system (and the entire body). Tip #4 – Probiotics! (While this is not an essential oil, it is important enough to include on this list.) Did you know that gut health is about 80% of the immune system?? 80%!!! Did you know that one single round of antibiotics can kill all of the healthy gut bacteria that is such a huge part of your immune system? Whether you’ve used antibiotics recently or not, it’s important for all of us to maintain a healthy gut using probiotics. Again, research the quality of your probiotics. Tip #5 – I want to leave you with one last thing—what happens if you DO get the flu? Our family hasn’t actually gotten the flu, but whenever we feel something coming on, we start using our F.L.O.O.M. bomb to keep it at bay.
In a 10 ml roller bottle, add 8-10 drops each of Frankincense, Lemon, Oregano, OnGuard, and Melaleuca. Fill to the top with fractionated coconut oil. Roll on the bottom of the feet every 2-3 hours.
*For children under 50 pounds, use 1-2 drops of each oil and omit Oregano.
